Parking and Manoeuvres

Parallel parking, alley docking and turning in the road using clear reference points.

8 min read

Learning objectives
  • Use reference points to judge position accurately
  • Complete parallel parking within the marked area
  • Reverse under control with all-round observation

Slow is control

Every manoeuvre works better at walking pace. Slow vehicle, quick steering. Use clutch control in a manual vehicle to keep the speed down without stopping.

Parallel parking

Line up alongside the space, reverse until your reference point aligns, apply full lock towards the kerb, straighten as the vehicle enters the bay, then apply opposite lock to bring the rear in. Adjust with small movements rather than one large correction.

Alley docking

Approach at the correct distance from the bay, use your mirror reference to judge the turn-in point, and check both sides continually as the vehicle swings.

Turning in the road

Full observation before and during each part of the turn. Steer briskly while moving slowly, and prepare the steering for the next leg before you move again.
