Moving Off and Stopping

Observe, signal and manoeuvre so that moving off and stopping is always controlled.

5 min read

Learning objectives
  • Apply the mirror-signal-manoeuvre routine
  • Move off on the level and from behind a parked vehicle
  • Stop smoothly and safely on the left

Mirror, signal, manoeuvre

Observation comes first. Check the interior and right mirrors, check the blind spot over your right shoulder, signal if it would help another road user, then move off when the road is clear.

Moving off at an angle

When a vehicle is parked ahead of you, more steering and more clutch control are needed. Creep out slowly, keep checking forward and to the right, and straighten up once you are clear.

Stopping smoothly

Plan early. Mirrors, signal, ease off the accelerator, brake progressively and release brake pressure slightly just before the vehicle stops so that there is no jolt. Handbrake on, gear into neutral.

Use this with a lesson

Reading a module is preparation. Book a lesson to practise the checklist in the car.
