Intersections and Road Awareness

Read intersections early, judge gaps and anticipate what other road users will do.

7 min read

Learning objectives
  • Apply right-of-way rules at intersections and circles
  • Judge safe gaps when turning across traffic
  • Anticipate the actions of pedestrians and other drivers

Approach and priority

Read the signs and markings early, decide your position and speed before you arrive, and know who has right of way. At a four-way stop, the first to stop goes first; if you arrive together, the vehicle on the right goes first.

Traffic circles

Give way to traffic already in the circle and approaching from the right. Signal your exit, keep your lane and look out for vehicles cutting across lanes.

Turning across traffic

A safe gap means you can complete the turn without another driver having to brake. If you are unsure, wait: a short delay is better than an emergency stop for someone else.

Hazard awareness

Scan far ahead, use mirrors regularly and watch for pedestrians, minibus taxis stopping suddenly, cyclists and vehicles pulling out of driveways. Anticipation gives you time.
